The easiest way to get a good, clean cut in hardened steels. Perfect for altering 1911 slides for low mount style rear. (Cut most of slot with mill, finish with dovetail cutter.) Gives extended tool life when used in softer metals. 3/16" diameter is the right cutter to use when converting Remington M-700 bolts to accept Sako-style extractors.
These cutters are specially designed by us and made to our specifications for cutting the sight base slot required to mount the Wichita and Novak Lo-Mount 1911 Auto sights. Use ¼" carbide end mill to remove the bulk of the material (see drawing above) then make final dovetail cut. Final cut to lower rear of slide is done with an end mill and is not a part of the sight base cut. Made slightly undersized to compensate for variations in sight bases and milling tolerances on installation. With the popularity of custom 1911 Auto Pistols, this cutter is one that you will use frequently in your custom work. CAUTION: For use in milling machine only. 2" (5cm). .495" diameter cut. ½" (12.7mm) diameter shank. 65° shoulder. DO NOT EXCEED 700 rpm, HIGHER SPEED WILL BREAK TEETH.
Center-cut, four-flute design cuts on the side and bottom to save machine time and money; you can make plunge cuts without pre-drilling. All are right-hand helix for right-hand turning equipment. For general purpose end milling operations in unhardened steels. ¼" through 7⁄16" sizes contain 8% cobalt for added toughness.
SPECS: 5mm through 3⁄8" sizes have 3⁄8" dia. shanks, ½" size has ½" dia. shank. Overall lengths from 2-7⁄16" (6.2cm) to 3¼" (8.25cm). ¼" (6.35mm) dia. x 5⁄8" (15.8mm) long cut. 3⁄8" (9.5mm) dia. x ¾" long cut. ½" (12.7mm) dia. x 1¼" (3.17cm) long cut.
The .480x65 Dovetail Cutter enhances the capabilities of any gunsmith looking to install Low Mount sights onto project handguns and ensures that they have the right high-quality tool for the job.
The .480x65 Dovetail Cutter is designed specifically to cut a slightly undersized slot for rear sights that fit a standard .500" dovetail. The cutter is slightly undersized in order to provide gunsmiths with the ability to do final fitting and ensure that even slightly undersized sights will work.
The .480x65 Dovetail Cutter measures 2.53 inches in overall length and can be used to remove 0.001 of an inch of material after the initial pass for a precision-machined fit.
We've had many requests for a small dovetail cutter that would speed up the cutting of dovetails in front sight blades when installing colored inserts. The one we've had made cuts a ¼" wide dovetail, just right for sight inserts, and the finished product is very precise. Since the cutter is small, (it tapers to a diameter of .110"), you must make an initial cut with a 1/8" end mill. By using the end mill to remove some metal first, you'll avoid overloading the cutter and breaking it. CAUTION: For use in milling machine only. High speed steel. 21⁄32" (5.1cm) long. 1⁄4" (6.3cm) diameter shank. Maximum cut depth is .100" (2.5mm) 60° shoulder. DO NOT EXCEED 700 rpm, HIGHER SPEED WILL BREAK TEETH.
Four-flute, center-cut design produces smooth cuts and allows plunge cutting to eliminate pre-drilling. Right-hand cut, right-hand helix. Use in right-hand turning equipment. Single-ended. Premium, high feed rate carbide for hardened steels.
2" (5cm) long. .375" (9.5mm) diameter shaft. 60° shoulder. DO NOT EXCEED 700 rpm, HIGHER SPEED WILL BREAK TEETH. Sight is a .300” x 60 degree dovetail that may require machining of slide.
SPECS: Sight body – steel with matte black (blued) finish, .300” x 60 degree dovetail. Installation may require machining of slide.
This 8 flute staggered tooth carbide keyseat cutter is ideal for cutting rail slots on an 80% 1911 frame or for cutting hard welded frame rails on that custom 1911 project. Standard keyseat cutters only cut on the front face which can overheat the tool and cause it to dull much faster. This tool cuts on all 3 sides with 4 bottom facing teeth and 4 top facing teeth. All teeth cut on the face. This tool will last longer and cleaner than a standard keyseat cutter. This tool should only be used on a milling machine. It is not recommended for use with a drill press. This tool can also be used to true inner slide rails. If you touch off on this tool to set zero, make sure you touch off on the correct up or down facing tooth or you could break the tool and damage your work piece.
